Malik Herring, DE, Sophomore

It’s probably fair to say that I am pretty high on Malik Herring. That’s the reason I’ve saved him for last. The previous 3 players are all guys that I expect to step up and carve out bigger roles for themselves in 2018. Herring, however,  is someone that I think could step up and take over from Ledbetter when it’s time for him to move on.

It can’t be understated how impressive it was that Herring played in every single game last season. He was the only defensive freshman to do that and he did so in a group that was loaded with talented upperclassmen. That wasn’t an accident. Herring earned the trust of Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker in his first season. That speaks volumes in regards to what we can expect going forward.

For those of you who don’t remember how good this guy was in high school, check out his highlights. Herring was an absolute beast when he was playing on Friday nights. He played all over the line as well and he’s a guy who could very move around depending on the package.

I think Smart is going to find a way to get Herring on the field more in 2018. That’s why I’ll be keeping a close eye on him during the Spring camp. He’s someone who could genuinely force his way onto the field in a variety of roles if he takes a step up. It’s players like this that make G-Day so damn exciting.
