Brenton Cox, OLB, Freshman

Brenton Cox is going to be a bad, bad man in college football. Cox was pretty clear about what he was looking for when it came to a college. He wanted somewhere that would prepare him to be ready to play in the NFL in 3 years and be a first-round draft pick. That is the expectation that he’s set for himself and when you look at the raw tools, it’s certainly possible.

Physically, Cox looks like he could start for Georgia today. He’s an early enrollee who looks like he’s been in a college weight program for two years. At the Under Armour All American game, Cox took it a little easy during the practice sessions according to reports. But when it was game time, he stepped up a level and dominated some of the best high school players in the country.

Cox is the complete package for an OLB. He’s carrying more and better weight than Lorenzo Carter (who wasn’t exactly small) and is just as good against the run as he is rushing the passer. This is a player who has the singular focus on winning a job as soon as he arrives. He doesn’t like taking a back seat to anyone.

It’s going to be fascinating to see him in these spring sessions. Kirby Smart has shown several times that he will play the best guy even if that player has no experience. There aren’t many players that I’m looking forward to seeing more on G-day than Cox. He’s a guy to keep an eye out for G-day.
