Divaad Wilson, CB, Freshman

While UGA has 8 early enrollees this year, Wilson is the only DB who arrived early. Wilson is an exciting cornerback who could well end up playing anywhere, be it outside or the slot. However, he’s going to be the only true freshman of this group. That does put him at some form of disadvantage.

We saw last year that Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker are reluctant to play freshmen at DB. Both of those two guys are DB coaches at heart and they know how difficult it is to play in the secondary. They also understand how one mistake from a DB can cause a big play. That’s why they are so reluctant to just throw out youngsters unless they are special.

I don’t expect Wilson to get ahead of the other players on this list this spring. I am, however, very excited to see how he looks in G-day. One of the big differences between this spring and last year is the depth at DB. Last year, UGA’s second team receivers went up against walk-on players and looked great. This year, guys like Wilson will be there, trying to shut them down.

The first thing Wilson has to do is push himself in front of players like Eric Stokes and Latavious Brini. Both were 3-star recruits from 2017 but they also have a years worth of experience over him. If Wilson can get ahead of them on the depth chart, he’s got a shot to see the field in 2018.
