With spring football practice starting in 2 weeks, it’s never too early to look ahead to next season. Which teams will challenge the Georgia Football team in 2018?

1. September 8th at South Carolina

After a warm-up game against Austin Peay in the season opener this fall, Georgia Football will face an early test from SEC East foe South Carolina in Columbia in week 2. The Gamecocks finished the 2017 season with a respectable 9-4 record in Will Muschamp’s second season. The team also finished as the SEC East runner-up behind Georgia.

Part of what will make this game tough for Georgia is the environment. South Carolina is a tough atmosphere to play in. However, I expect Georgia fans will travel well enough to somewhat mitigate South Carolina’s home-field advantage in this game.

South Carolina has improved from year to year under Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks have had 2 respectable recruiting classes during the last 2 cycles (although they pale in comparison to what Kirby Smart has done on the recruiting trial for Georgia). Most importantly, talented South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley will be back to lead the Gamecocks’ offense for another year in 2018.

None of this is to say Georgia will not win this game. I fully expect the Dawgs to take care of business. Georgia will be favored in this game because it is simply way more talented than South Carolina.

However, the Dawgs do not need to take the Gamecocks lightly. Let’s not forget what some South Carolina teams under Steve Spurrier did to Georgia despite being heavy underdogs. To be fair, those games were during the Mark Richt era. Kirby Smart has changed the culture of Georgia football and I expect this team to give South Carolina its full attention when September 8th arrives.
