Georgia Football: Looking at a post-Combine Mock Draft

ATLANTA, GA - JANUARY 08: Roquan Smith
ATLANTA, GA - JANUARY 08: Roquan Smith

Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller did a full 7-round mock draft after the NFL Combine. In it, he predicted 8 Georgia Football players to be taken. Here are my thoughts on those picks:

For those of you who like the NFL draft, Matt Miller is a pretty good guy to read. He’s pretty in touch with how teams feel about prospects and so he remains one of the better mock drafters out there.

After the NFL Combine, Miller put together a full 7-round mock draft. In it, he had 8 Georgia Football players drafted, which would be pretty awesome for UGA. Now, of course, Miller does not include trades in his mocks. That makes them inaccurate because we know they are going to happen. However, it’s impossible to actually guess what those trades will be, especially before Free Agency.

Below is a list of where Bleacher Report foresees 8 UGA players being drafted:

Roquan Smith, linebacker: First Round (No. 9) to San Francisco 49ers

Isaiah Wynn, offensive guard: First Round (No. 19) to Dallas Cowboys

Sony Michel, running back: Second Round (No. 36) to Indianapolis Colts

Lorenzo Carter, linebacker: Second Round (No. 37) to New York Jets

Trenton Thompson, defensive tackle: Fourth Round (No. 103) to Houston Texans

Nick Chubb, running back: Fourth Round (No. 107) to New York Jets

Davin Bellamy, linebacker: Fourth Round (No. 110) to Oakland Raiders

Dominick Sanders, safety: Fifth Round (No. 168) Seattle Seahawks

My Takeaways:

There is a lot I like about this mock. However, I do think that Miller has overvalued some UGA players and undervalued others. To start with, I don’t think there is any chance that Nick Chubb should fall to the fourth round. Could he drop to the 3rd, I guess so, but I’m sorry, I just don’t think there are many running backs better than him.

He should be a day two pick and if teams like the Detroit Lions pick someone like Kerryon Johnson in the 2nd over Chubb then that’s going to be a mistake. Johnson has struggled to stay healthy his entire time at Auburn and had a weak Combine. Picking him over a guy as consistently good as Chubb would be ridiculous.

Also, as much as I love Davin Bellamy, I’m not sure he’s going to go in the 4th round. That’s a round where you hope to find NFL starters and I’m just not sure that Bellamy is going to be one of those. I like Bellamy, a lot, but it can’t be ignored that he lost a lot of playing time this past year to D’Andre Walker.

Look, I think that Bellamy should be drafted. I believe that there are things he does really well and he can bring to an NFL team. But I do think that Miller is overvaluing him right now. I’d love to be wrong. If Miller has NFL teams telling him that they are going to take Bellamy that high then good for Davin. He’s a guy I’d love to see get paid at the next level.

Next: Dawgs tearing up NFL Combine

Finally, where on earth is Javon Wims? I’m sorry but I can’t see him going undrafted. He’s too much of a physical talent and too good of a ball catcher to not have anyone call his name. The guy just showed that he has speed as well when he ran a 4.53 40 yard dash. I think he goes in the 4th or 5th round and hangs around the NFL for a while. There just aren’t many receivers in the class that are better than him in my opinion.
