With Georgia Basketball moving on from Mark Fox, here are the three best candidates that we believe could take UGA to the next level.

With Mark Fox now gone, Georgia Basketball will be looking for a new head coach. This is probably going to be the biggest hire of Greg McGarity’s career as the AD. Kirby Smart was a move that was driven by boosters rather than him. As soon as it became known that Smart was ready to take an HC job, Georgia was going to get him. Almost all of the big spenders were going to move heaven and earth to make it happen. McGarity had very little to do other than sign the contract and it’s worked out pretty well.

But those same boosters aren’t particularly interested in basketball. While UGA has just invested roughly $30 million into the revamped Stegman Collusium, the fact remains that basketball remains a secondary sport in Athens. That being said, as I wrote earlier, UGA can be a good basketball program. It has the location and the national profile to attract good players. If Georgia can bring in a good head coach, this program can begin to rise.

That’s going to fall on McGarity. He’s not going to have big-time donors holding his hand through this negotiation. UGA is going to have to identify and then sign a basketball coach that can take the program to the next level. They are probably going to have to open the chequebook as well.

Mark Fox is a decent coach who took UGA as far as he could. He’ll have another job shortly and he will likely do a good job there. If Georgia wants improved results, that’s going to take a better coach and those cost money.  These are the three candidates I believe are the most likely to take UGA to the next level.
