Earl Grant

Grant is the least experienced guy on this list. He has climbed his way up the coaching ranks and has been the head coach at the College of Charleston for the past 4 years. In that time, he has taken a program that struggled for a while and taken them into the NCAA Tournament this year after they won their conference.

Grant is one of the highest regarded mid-major coaches. At 41 years old, he’s quite a bit younger than the other two candidates and he’s yet to prove himself. He is going to to be a heavily sought-after candidate, however. Grant has proven himself to be a good recruiter throughout his time in college basketball and at some point, a big program is going to take a swing at him.

The question is, should that be UGA? Of all the mid-major coaches out there, Grant is the only one I would want them to take a swing at. He’s learned under some terrific coaches and has built up a small program the right way.

Fans wanting a big name might be disappointed with Grant. The same would probably be true of Jonas Hayes, the UGA assistant who will likely get an interview. Still, both of them could end up being good thanks to their ability to recruit. That being said, neither of them will excite fans in the way that Crean of Matta will.
