It looks like Georgia Basketball has decided it wants Thad Matta to be its next head coach. But does he want to come to Athens?

If the reports are to be believed, Georgia Basketball has settled on its main target for the head coach. Multiple outlets are reporting that Thad Matta was offered the position after his interview on Monday. The longtime Ohio State coach is now mulling over whether he wants to come to Athens.

All the reports are claiming that Matta is the clear front-runner for UGA. His experience and success in Columbus would certainly agree with that position. It’s rare for coaches like this to be free agents, but Matta struggled with some health problems during his final few years at Ohio State and so was pushed out after the 2016/17 season.

I can understand why UGA wants Matta. Coaches like him rarely become available. It’s even rarer that the school doesn’t have to pay a buyout from someone else for a guy like him. However, his success means that Georgia might have to wait. There are several other big-time jobs that are available right now that Matta could be interested in.

Louisville might be on the verge of serious sanctions, but that is one of the best basketball programs in the nation. Pitt is also a big-time school and he knows the area pretty well. UConn could also reach out and try and lure him to Connecticut.

I personally think UGA would be a great fit for Matta. He knows how to thrive at a school where Football is the most important thing. Fans want to see the basketball program win and Georgia has lots of talent for recruiting. If he’s up for it, he could become the most successful coach in program history.

Fans are crossing their fingers and saying a quick prayer right now. If Matta comes to Athens, it could be a new dawn for Georgia Basketball. Let’s just hope he feels the same way.
