Can Georgia Basketball convince the second most qualified coach out there, Tom Crean, to come to Athens and become head coach?

Well we missed on Thad Matta guys. That’s about it, nothing more to say. But Georgia Basketball doesn’t seem to be backing down quite yet. They aren’t prepared to dive straight into the mid-major ranks by the looks of it. Instead, they are interviewing Tom Crean today.

Crean achieved decent success at two good programs. He did a really great job at Marquette before heading to Indiana. There, after recovering from sanctions left by the previous regime, he built a strong program that made the sweet 16 three times.

He doesn’t have the resume that Matta does, but Crean is a really good coach. If they hired him, it would be a home run for a UGA program starving for a big time name. There is no guarantee that Crean would replicate the success he had at previous jobs, but he has shown himself to be a great recruiter and good at developing talent.

To be honest, I’m not sure UGA fans should get their hopes up on this one. There are other jobs out there that are better than UGA. UConn and Louisville are just two that spring to mind. Both of whom are closer to Crean’s geographical neck of the woods and are basketball first football second.

Earl Grant from the College of Charleston remains my most likely candidate to take the job to be honest. I just don’t know if UGA will win the battle for Crean, but I’d love to be proved wrong. That being said, I’m glad Greg McGarity is at least trying to bring in a top coach. Even if he swings for the fences and misses twice, it’s better than just settling straight away.
