Georgia Bulldogs thrive while Vols have a difficult weekend

While the Georgia Bulldogs had a great weekend in two different sports, things were not quite so good for the Tennessee Volunteers.

There’s nothing like beating the Vols is there? Well to be honest, that’s not true. Normally, they are about 4th on my list of rivalries, way behind Florida, Auburn and Clemson. However, after the absolute spanking we gave their football team this past season, I’ve seen a lot of sour grapes sweep throughout their fan base.

It started when UGA lost in the National Championship game and continued throughout the mens basketball season. When their fans aren’t belittling Kirby Smart and calling him a loser, they’re proclaiming themselves as the new king of SEC basketball. It was therefore pretty funny to see the two schools have very different weekends.

Kirby Smart went in to Tennessee and got a commitment from one of the states best players in Bill Norton. That commitment came immediately after Norton had visited the Vols. I’m terribly sorry, I couldn’t hear your boasting over the sound of your states top prospect coming to Athens? While these battles never end until the players sign, this was a shot across the bow for Smart. He’s not going to be intimidated by Pruitt or his staff.

Then we have basketball. While UGA was celebrating getting their new head coach in Tom Crean, the Vols were getting upset in the NCAA Tournament by Loyola of Chicago. Guess those Tennessee fans shouldn’t have bought their tickets to the Final Four quite yet.

This past weekend was a good one for UGA in the long standing rivalry. It’s unlikely to make Vols fans any less salty of course, but that’s why rivalries are fun. Now, if only we can beat them in Baseball this season…
