After a pair of victories over Florida this past weekend, Georgia softball moved up from no. 12 in the ESPN.com poll and no. 10 in the Coaches Poll to no. 7 in both polls.

It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog right now. Basketball season in Athens might be over, but our Diamond Dawgs are playing some of their best ball in years. The team playing the best right now is Georgia softball (27-2, 5-1) who are coming off a series victory over then no. 3/no. 2 Florida.

The Bulldogs won game one with a walk-off home run by Alyssa DiCarlo, and won game two 11-1 in five innings. Georgia’s triumph resulted in both the ESPN.com Poll and the Coaches Poll moving Georgia up to no. 7, and dropping the Gators down to no. 6.

It is frustrating that both didn’t rank Georgia ahead of Florida. After all, you would think that winning a series would warrant Georgia moving ahead of Florida. All Georgia can do about that is win. They defeated Georgia Southern 10-3 Wednesday night.

But they have another huge test this weekend with a trip to no. 21/no. 23 Mississippi State. Another series victory over a ranked SEC opponent might convince voters to put Georgia ahead of Florida and possibly join Tennessee in the top-5.

If you don’t buy into rankings, Georgia is no. 6 in the RPI behind Tennessee and Florida. Georgia is 9-2 against teams in the RPI top-50. The biggest factor that keeps them below Tennessee and Florida is that they are yet to play a true road game. instead, Georgia is 4-1 on neutral fields and 22-1 at home. Tennessee is below Florida for only playing two road games and 21 neutral games.

Of Georgia’s remaining 11 opponents, six of them are in the RPI top-50 for a total of 18 games. The Bulldogs are the visiting team in four of those series. So there are plenty of opportunities for Georgia to claim a top-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
