Georgia Football wrapped up week one of spring practice on Saturday with its first practice in pads. Here are some of the takeaways:

Spring practice is underway for Georgia Football and I’m excited! While others are writing about baseball, softball and other sports, I just can’t seem to get enough football. We’ve got highly rated freshmen in the building as well as some really exciting other players looking to make a move.

Today was the first practice with pads and that’s always a big one. Apparently, several players really stood out and showed who they are ready to move up the depth chart. So let’s take a look, starting with none other than QB’s.

QB Battle is on and UGA is going to be the winner:

There is no doubt that Justin Fields has some eye-popping talent. In this setting, we don’t really get to see his athletic ability. Unsurprisingly, UGA is not asking their new QB to run around all the time. However, his arm has really impressed observers. So many fans think of him just as a dual threat, but there is no doubt that the guy can sling it. He’s a genuinely special passer.

Jake Fromm has also looked better this spring. Reports have suggested that his arm strength has improved and that he’s looking really sharp. Fromm has always been a hard worker, but I expect having Fields on campus is only going to make him better.

Both of these players are alphas. They love to compete and both of them think that they are good enough to win the job. Fromm was fantastic last season and I don’t think that Fields is going to overcome him this year. But I continue to believe that they are going to help each other improve.

This is the kind of competition that Kirby Smart preaches about. He’s pushed the idea of Iron sharpening Iron since he arrived. Getting to see this being practised at the games toughest position is a good motivator for the rest of the team. Nobody’s position is safe and you have to work hard every day to keep your spot.
