Georgia Football: Takeaways from first week of Spring Practice
Running backs looking impressive:
Speaking of position battles, there’s one of those going on at running back. I thought it was interesting listening to Kirby Smart at the press conference about how different it was without Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.
Smart said that Chubb took most of the carries last season in the spring. That between him and Michel, the other backs didn’t get a chance to do much until G-day. Things are very different this year, with D’Andre Swift, Elijah Holyfield and Brian Herrien all getting more practice reps than they ever have.
D’Andre Swift looks like he’s lost a little bit of weight in the offseason and he’s even more explosive than before. I still think he’s going to be the starting running back but Holyfield and Herrien will push for time. Both of them look improved and are hungry to impress the coaches.
One of the reasons they are pushing so hard is on the sidelines of practice. Zamir White is recovering from a torn ACL but physically he’s hard to miss. He’s getting dressed for practice every day and he’s already jogging and doing some walkthroughs.
All the reporters that are there keep saying the same thing. That White looks like a rare physical specimen. Right now, it looks like he has a chance to start practising again in the fall. When that happens, he’s going to steal reps so the other 3 need to impress and keep getting better.
