Georgia Football: Takeaways from first week of Spring Practice
An offensive lineman is stepping away from football:
One piece of bad news that came out of this week was that it looks like UGA is losing an offensive lineman. Sam Madden was a part of the 2015 class and he was a 4-star prospect. He has tremendous size, coming in at 6ft6 and 330lbs, but he’s never been able to quite put it together since Sam Pittman arrived.
Now we might know why. Kirby Smart announced on Saturday that Madden has been dealing with a serious injury. Because of that injury, the Georgia doctors have recommended that he no longer plays football. This likely brings his football career at UGA to an end although he will likely remain with the team in some capacity.
With this decision, Georgia is currently sitting at 88 players on scholarship when you include the 26 players it signed in this class. It cannot exceed 85 players on the roster so Madden will not be the only player who goes elsewhere. Whether that will be because of injuries like Madden or transfer, we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s certainly good that UGA is making Madden’s health a priority right now though. Some things remain more important than football.
