Georgia Football: What leaders are emerging this Spring
Lamont Gaillard, C:
There wasn’t much doubt who was the leader of the offensive line was in 2017. Isaiah Wynn was the starting left tackle to start the season and at no point was that going to change. With Wynn now a possible 1st round pick, it’s up to someone else on the line to step up.
Gaillard is the most obvious candidate. Firstly, he’s one of only two seniors who are starting. Secondly, of those two, he’s also the only one who is expected to hold on to his place throughout the season. Kendall Baker is starting next to him at left guard right now, but he’s going to to be pushed really hard by several newcomers.
Gaillard, much like Wynn last year, is really the only choice for his position this year. Unless he gets injured, he’s likely going to play every snap in 2018. Besides those two players, the rest of the line is going to be very young. Andrew Thomas started every game, but he’s just going to b a sophomore. Ben Cleveland is going into his 3rd year, but he’s only started the final few games last year. Isaiah Wilson and Cade Mays are battling it out for the RT job and both are freshmen.
Gaillard might not have their talent, but his work ethic is impressive. I’ve read that he’s been coaching up Trey Hill and Warren Ericson after each rep when Sam Pittman gets after them. Helping those young guys along is a critical part of his job this season. His experience is invaluable and UGA needs him to use that to help others get better. He’s one of the most important players on offense this upcoming season and he’s behaving like one in practice.
