Georgia Football: What leaders are emerging this Spring
Jonathan Ledbetter, DE:
And then of course, there’s the big dawg himself. The more time that goes by, the more likely it seems like Ledbetter is going to be the leader o the defense. Part of that is because of just how hard he’s playing in practice right now. The rest however is that the defense is much more of a work in progress than the offense.
On the offensive side of the ball, can already count 4 guys who are going to push to be captains this year. The three I have already mentioned and Terry Godwin, who continues to set a great example to a young receiving corp. On the defense, it’s not quite so easy. 3 of these 4 have already produced great seasons. Nauta is the only one who needs to step up from a production front and that’s just not the case on defense.
There are a lot of guys who COULD step up on D. Tyler Clark could be a beast this year, same for D’Andre Walker or Deandre Baker. JR Reed was consistent last year and could well end up being that vocal leader in the secondary that the team is going to need.
But I haven’t heard anything about those guys so far. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t doing good work or getting better. It’s just that they haven’t clearly showed that they are going to step up and lead this unit.
Next: Every job is up for grabs right now
That’s not the case with Ledbetter who writers have been talking about since the season ended. The guy is practicing like a lunatic and is leaving everything out there on the field each session. Ledbetter was already one of the best players on the team when we got to the postseason last year. Look for him to take his game to a whole other level in his senior season.
