Georgia Football Recruiting: 2019 Commit Jalen Perry
Looking at the tape:
Whn you put the film on, one thing stands out straight away. Perry is a really good athlete. Is he a Tyson Campbell level superstar? I don’t think so no, but while he doesn’t have that blazing speed, he’s pretty damn close. We tend to often think that it’s only the guys right at the top that have elite level traits, but that’s not true and Perry is an example of that.
A surprising number of his highlights are from the offensive side of the ball. That’s because the guy has the ability to be a weapon whenever he gets the ball in his hands and make plays. That’s always a good thing for college coaches. Mel Tucker and Kirby Smart can coach up defensive backs, but they can’t teach the ability to score on turnovers that Perry has. I mean, he scored A LOT of TD’s last year. He has the ability to take a turnover and put points on the board.
This is still just his junior film in high school so unsurprisingly, Perry does look a bit raw in the secondary. He often relies on that superior athletic ability rather than great technique. Then again, that’s pretty much what most high school CB’s do. They are assigned to play that position because their coaches hope that they are more athletic than their opposite number. In many cases Perry is.
My biggest concern with him is that his defensive film is not as good as his tape from the offensive side. That’s not entirely surprising, because players can always look better with the ball in their hands. But from a defensive standpoint, I hope we’ll be able to see some clear improvement between this year and next.
All the traits you want form a top CB are there in Perry’s game. They are clearly visible when you watch him play, whatever side of the ball he’s on. If he continues to develop, he has the ability to be elite cornerback at the next level.
