How good has his offseason been?

When you have had a career as good as Smith, you don’t need to do a great deal in the offseason. Having come out as a junior, he didn’t have the option of playing at the Senior Bowl. He was, of course, asked to attend the NFL Combine and there he showed off his speed, running the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds.

Unfortunately, Smith tweaked his hamstring during that run and so sat out the rest of the drills. He did work out at the UGA’s pro day and by all counts was as impressive as expected. When you have film as good as Smith, there isn’t really much need to impress in shorts and gym clothes.

Smith has interviewed with lots of NFL teams. That started at the Combine and continued through the Pro Day and I would expect him to spend the next few weeks spending time with some of the teams who have an eye on him. When you are likely to be a 1st round draft pick, teams want to get you know you and make sure they are comfortable with the person, not just the player.

That shouldn’t be an issue for Smith who was a model citizen at Georgia. Having stepped up in his Junior season and become a vocal leader, teams know what they are getting in him. Not only is he going to be good on the field, but he’s someone who could end up being a great guy off of it as well.
