2018 Georgia Football NFL Draft Prospect: LB Roquan Smith
Could he be better in the pros?
One of the reasons that Smith is such a highly ranked prospect is his versatility to play in any scheme. Some players will clearly excel in one type of defense. That’s not the case with Smith, who could easily be an ILB in a 3-4 scheme or a WLB in a 4-3.
Smith was so good in Athens that it’s hard to envision him being even better at the next level. But there’s no doubt that he has the ability to keep growing as a player. Landing with the right coaching staff that has identified which position he’s going to play is going to be key for Smith. He has all the talent to be well worth a first-round draft pick.
His leadership and ability to diagnose plays should make him a clear choice to be a defensive captain in the future. Once he’s learned a scheme, I can easily see him moving his teammates around and getting them in position.
Despite coming in with a high floor, Smith also has a tremendously high ceiling as a prospect. While he is a little undersized, his speed and instincts make him a natural at the position. He looks like a future pro-bowler and I have a feeling that he’ll become a fan favorite pretty quickly.
