Georgia softball moved up to no. 5 in the USA Softball top 25, surpassing Florida who they defeated in two out of three games a few weeks ago. They’re now the highest ranked out of the 11 ranked SEC teams.

Georgia softball continued their dominance of the SEC this past weekend with a pair of mercy-rule victories over Tennessee. As a result, USA Softball couldn’t keep Georgia below Florida any longer. The Bulldogs jumped the Gators and joined the top five.

The main factor that kept Georgia below Florida in the rankings was their lack of road games. After the Florida series, Georgia was 27-2. But all of their games had either been in Athens or at a neutral site.

The Bulldogs next two series’ in the SEC included trips to Mississippi State and Tennessee. Both of which are top-25 teams, and Tennessee was ranked no. 2 at one point. Georgia claimed both of those series’, and after beating Georgia Tech last night, they are 5-2 on the road. That eliminates all doubt of their ability to win games in front of enemy crowds.

Being the highest ranked team in the SEC is no small feat. 11 of the conference’s 13 teams (Vanderbilt doesn’t have a softball team) are ranked in the top-25. That group includes Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas and Mississippi State.

All of Georgia’s SEC opponents so far have come from that list. And of their final four SEC series’, two of those are against ranked teams. That might become three since Ole Miss does have some top-25 votes.

The Bulldog’s next opponent is Missouri who is last place in the SEC with a record of 20-19 overall and 3-9 in the SEC. It’s the beginning of a road stand for Georgia. After Missouri, the Dawgs host Georgia State next Wednesday, Mercer next weekend and USC-Upstate the following Wednesday.
