2018 Georgia Football NFL Draft Prospect: RB Sony Michel
Projected draft grade and potential landing spots:
Michel is ranked by most media scouts as a top 30 overall talent. That means that it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him taken in the first round. The fact that he’s a running back however means that he could well fall into the top of the 2nd. That’s just the way things go in the NFL where running backs have shortish careers.
That sort of draft range puts a lot of teams in play for him. With teams these days having cost control over their draft picks, pretty much any team between pick 20 and 50 could end up taking Michel. Unless you have a Todd Gurley or Zeke Elliott, you can find room for Sony Michel on your roster. Even the Steelers could look into drafting him. Le’Veon Bell is incredible, but if they can’t get a long term deal sorted, Michel would be a fantastic replacement.
I personally have Michel ranked as my 2nd favorite running back in this class. Saquon Barkley is in a whole different class, the guy is a generational player. But I’m not as high on Guice as many and I really don’t like Ronald Jones. I think Michel’s ability to do everything, run, catch and block make him the clear number 2 RB in the class.
What’s more, I really think that his leadership ability will be welcome in any NFL locker room. To me, he’s the kind of guy who solidifies your RB spot for the next decade. Unless he gets injured, he’s going to be an 8-10 year starter in the league and he’ll win you plenty of games.
