Isaiah Wilson OT

Oh of the best position matchups all spring has been at right tackle. Where the line was pretty suspect last spring, things are very different this year. Andrew Thomas has moved over to the left side and is holding down left tackle. That is leaving Isaiah Wilson and Cade Mays to fight it out on the right-hand side.

Wilson has been the starter all spring. Having redshirted his freshman season, he’s come back with vengeance in 2018. One of the top tackles in the country in high school, Wilson has the sort of freakish tools you cannot teach. He’s the biggest player on the entire team and he’s not just big, he’s incredibly powerful.

Saturday will be the first chance UGA fans get to see Wilson play. We’ll get to see how he holds up in pass protection and then there’s the run blocking. I’m really excited to see what he can do out there in the run game next to Ben Cleveland. That’s almost 700lbs of nastiness coming down the track in 2 huge human beings. Who wouldn’t want to run the rock behind that?

Cade Mays OT

Mays is the player that is pushing Wilson all the way right now. A true freshman, Mays was a 5-star prospect in his own right. Like Wilson, he needs to work on his pass protection but he thrives in the run game.

Talking about nasty, Mays has some of the nastiest high school tape I have ever seen. I’m sure he won’t be too chippy because it’s a practice game, but I do expect to see him play with an edge. It’s just who he is.

Mays will be the right tackle on the second team so he’ll be going up against some interesting prospects. He’ll likely have to hold off the likes of Brenton Cox and Robert Beal which won’t be easy. Then again, they will be a step down from what Wilson is facing which should help him. By the sounds of it, tackles want nothing to do with blocking Jonathan Ledbetter right now…
