Georgia Football: Defensive Players to watch on G-day
Richard LeCounte S
Oh Richard LeCounte. If there is one player from the 2017 class that I expect to step up big this year it’s him. Having learned behind Dominick Sanders last year, LeCounte came had times where he saw the field. He played quite a bit early on while others battled injuries, but saw that time reduce when they came back.
Fast forward a year and Kirby Smart has made it clear what he expects. He made a few comments the other week about LeCounte that raised some eyebrows but I think he was trying to send a clear message. This is the position Kirby Smart played himself and the one he coached. He knows what it takes to be a great safety and he also knows LeCounte has tremendous talent.
By putting some pressure on him and stressing that this team ‘needs him’, Smart is pushing LeCounte to get better. If he reaches his potential, this could be one of the best players in the country at his position and he could make up for a lot of deficiencies in a defense. G-day will be the first time we all get to see him starting out there next to JR Reed. I for one cannot wait to see how he looks.
Trey Bishop S
From a pure talent perspective, there aren’t many better than tray Bishop. Having been recruited to play QB at Auburn, he instead chose UGA because he wanted to try and become a DB for a professional career. The guy has got everything, size, speed and explosiveness. He just needs to keep growing and learn the position.

I’m really hoping we get to see Bishop out there on the second unit. There are lots of different places that he could play, but I really think he could be a fantastic replacement for JR Reed in the future. Hopefully Saturday is the first step for him getting to show Dawg nation exactly the kind of player he can be in Athens.
