Georgia Football hosts G-day tomorrow and UGA fans should stop by a benefit that is being hosted to raise money for Devon Gales.
Tomorrow is the annual G Day game and it will be an all-day event that all Georgia football fans should experience at least once. It’s always been a great event. But since Kirby Smart has become head coach of UGA and had the now famous 93k day its taken a step up. This Saturday is jam-packed with events. It starts with the Alumni flag football game and the Dawg walk to autograph signings by Georgia greats Nick Chubb, Lorenzo Carter, and Isaiah Wynn at the UGA bookstore. And of course, at 4 p.m. it will be Team Red vs. Team Black in which we will get to see the Dawgs scrimmage. We will get to see a new kid named Justin Fields play a little QB, and I hear he’s supposed to be pretty good.
One of the coolest things about G Day is that it’s free. Always has been, and hopefully, it always will be. Saturday’s weather forecast is calling for a high of 72 with a good bit of sun and a just few afternoon clouds. It will be an absolutely perfect day for the G Day game.
It will also be a great day for charity.
Canned goods will be accepted as part of the annual food drive. You can meet former UGA quarterback David Greene at this event which takes place at Gate 7 of Sanford Stadium from 1-4 p.m. The event that I’m looking forward to the most perhaps, and where I plan on spending most of my pre-game/tailgating time, is the benefit being held for former Southern football player Devon Gales. Gales and former UGA punter Marshall Morgan collided in a 2015 game. Morgan got back up. Gales, unfortunately, had to be carried off the field.
I was at that game and remember it well. The injury was obviously severe, and it was one that left the young man paralyzed. The families of the 2 players have developed a friendship since then. The Morgans have done a lot to raise awareness of and help the Gales. This includes organizing Saturday’s event. They are trying to get a house built for Devon and his family. This will include all the equipment necessary to help him in his daily struggles as he continues his recovery. All the proceeds from the below event will go to help the Gales family.
How you can help Devon:
The G Day tailgate for Devon will be held behind the Baptist Student Union on South Lumpkin Street from 12-3 p.m. tomorrow. A minimum donation of 5 dollars is asked of those attending, but more is encouraged of course. Food will be provided, including 2 hogs smoked by Tennyson Hull of Slo Rollin BBQ. Devon Gales and Marshall Morgan will be attending. A raffle will be held as well. Prizes include a basketball signed by the “Inside the NBA” guys. That includes Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal, gift certificates and a PlayStation 4. A minimum 10 dollar donation is required to be entered into the raffle. The website to make donations is www.buildfordevon.com and if you want to be entered into the raffle, you must email your name and amount donated to gdaytailgatefordevon@gmail.com.
Next: G-day is a revival for Georgia Football and its fans
Let’s all come out Saturday and while enjoying a beautiful Georgia spring day. It’s been awesome to see the Georgia fanbase rally behind the Gales family. I hope many of you join me and others tomorrow and do a little bit more to help out this inspirational young man.
