‘Wow’ athletic ability:

Speaking of moving, It’s safe to say that Fields can do a little bit of that as well. Obviously, with it being practice, Fields wasn’t going to be running live. Preventing injuries remains the most important part of the scrimmage so you don’t want to see your QB’s getting pummelled. Whenever defensive players touched either QB, the refs blew the play dead.

But let’s be clear about one thing, Fields would likely have run wild if he’d been allowed to. The few times where he pulled down and ran were pretty crazy. He just moves around the pocket so smoothly and with such purpose. I love the way that he kept his eyes down the field until the last minute as well, that was not something I was expecting. He looked to run a lot more in high school which shows that he’s already growing within Jim Chaney’s system.

He’s clearly big and strong in the pocket, but his speed and elusiveness are genuinely shocking. The guy goes from zero to ‘bye bye’ in less than 3 steps when he sees a gap. I really think we’re talking Lamar Jackson speed here. Maybe he’s not quite as fast over distance, but over the first 10-20 yards, Fields is special.

All of which makes him all the more enticing as a prospect. We haven’t had a chance to see him really break out and use that athletic ability yet. We won’t until we get to this fall and actual games. But I do know that rival defensive coordinators will be freaking out right now. Knowing that UGA has a weapon like this that they can throw in whenever must be actually terrifying.
