Jake Fromm and Justin Fields both showed flashes at G-Day and Georgia Football has a bright future at the QB position.
Some might call it a quarterback battle. I’m not going to agree with that, Jake Fromm did nothing to suggest that he’s still not the starter come September. But watching G-Day, it was clear to see that just like last year the young freshman isn’t afraid of the big stage. Georgia Football looks like it’s onto a winner at the position.
Justin Fields looked pretty damn good out there. We saw flashes of his running potential although the coaches didn’t really turn him loose. The arm strength and accuracy were also very good. While it’s worth remembering that he’s going up against the second team defense, Fields certainly impressed.
Fromm had a bit of a difficult scrimmage. He threw two picks and struggled at times to move the offense as well as I would have liked. That being said, it’s worth remembering that both QB’s essentially played without a running game. Kirby Smart said in the press conference after that the game plan did not involve much running. They wanted to get their passers as many reps as possible. Both QB’s also saw several good passes dropped by receivers.
Going into the fall, Georgia fans can probably feel pretty good about the QB position. Smart and his coaches will want to get Fields ready to play. As we saw last year, you never know when an injury can strike. But Fields is going to be a lot more than just a competent backup. It was just a spring scrimmage against a second-team defense, but he looks good.
We’ll have a lot more analysis from the game over the following week as we dive into the film, but one thing is for sure. UGA is pretty set at the games most important position right now.
