Javon Wims, WR:

How good was he in Athens?

Wims is a late bloomer who only had 2 seasons in Athens. The JUCO transfer came in back in 2016 and found his way into the back of the receiver rotation. He burst onto the scene this past season, however, when his connection with Freshman Jake Fromm really paid off.

Wims caught 45 passes in 2017 for 720 yards and 7 TDs. He became the most prolific receiver in the UGA stable and was often the guy Fromm turned to when he needed a first down. While he only had one real season in Athens, Wims made an impact. He made several big plays in the postseason including a TD in the Rose Bowl.

Could he be better in the pros?

While he is a senior, Wims is actually very young when it comes to football. He was originally a basketball player who had only played 19 games of football before he arrived in Athens. This is not a player who has physically tapped out by any means. The guy is still just reaching his potential.

I really think that Wims has the talent and the work ethic to have a decent career in the NFL. His combine numbers showed that he does have good speed to go along with his size. He’s a great catcher of the ball and showed that he’s someone QB’s can trust. Will he be a superstar? Probably not. But will he be someone Dawg fans get to watch on Sundays for quite a while, I think so.

Projected grade and landing spots:

I think that Wims will end up going pretty early on day 3. His impressive combine numbers suggest that to me, the guy could end up being a 4th round pick. I don’t expect him to go any lower than the 5th and to be honest, if he falls that far, that sounds like a steal to me.

This is a weak draft for wide receivers. Wims is the forgotten man because UGA ran the ball so much and he’s a one year guy. But any team that needs an outside pass catcher should give him a look. I could see teams like the Bills or the Jets really target him, especially if they get a young QB early on. Wims showed last season that he’s a young quarterback’s best friend. He’d be a great pick for either of those teams.
