Georgia football: Can the Bulldogs revive their rivalry with Clemson?
Possible scenarios
Lets say talks to renew the annual rivalry heat up. Swinney is obviously up for it and he manages to get the athletic director and administration on board. Kirby Smart see’s the positives in recruiting and presence in front of the playoff committee and he buys in. Then he convinces the university.
How would both schools go about this? Or more specifically, how would we go about this? Swinney and Clemson obviously do not care about playing both Georgia and South Carolina every year at this point. But we might not want to lose that free non-conference game. Here are a few ways that Georgia and Clemson could revive this rivalry:
Give up the free non-conference spot
Play Clemson every year and never have to worry about negotiating with other power-5 teams ever again.
Ditch Georgia Tech
At this point, who has more value as a rival, Clemson or Georgia Tech? Clemson helps us get on national TV in prime time in front of the whole country. Clemson is already an actual recruiting rival. Georgia Tech just brings cut blocking and an inferiority complex.
We can entertain Tech with a home-and-home every now and then. But do we really need to play them annually when we have a willing rival like Clemson? Just think about it.

Settle for more home-and-home series’
Reviving the rivalry on an annual basis is very unlikely, but that doesn’t mean Georgia and Clemson shouldn’t try to play more often. Maybe both teams can leave their season opener or second week of the season open to power-5 schools. And if there’s a year where neither Georgia or Clemson can fill that spot, they can schedule an impromptu game.
In fact, Both Georgia and Clemson have opportunities to do this in 2021 and 2024. They would just need to reschedule some existing games. after Georgia concludes their series with UCLA, they can make this agreement happen.
