Georgia Football: 2018 NFL Draft Dawg roundup
Trenton Thompson: Undrafted Cleveland Browns
If you wanted to see a single example of how coming out early doesn’t always work out, look no further than Thompson. The number one overall player in the 2015 high school class had an up and down career at Georgia. When he was healthy, he had games where he absolutely dominated. However, he missed a lot of time because of injury and played on 35% of snaps in his junior year.
Despite all this, it’s still a shock to see him go undrafted. The raw tools are all there. Thompson has all the potential to become a starting NFL player one day if he can over come his injuries. Unfortunately, his slide tells us that teams aren’t confident that will happen. That no team would even use a 7th round pick on him tells us that those medical reports must have been pretty bad.
His decision to sign with the Browns however is actually pretty positive. They are a rebuilding team who will take a chance on talent so he has a shot to make the roster. He will also have a friend in the locker room in Nick Chubb. Thompson has always been a quiet guy and hopefully having that familiar face can help him. When someone has experienced a disappointment like Trent, it should really help to have a guy in his corner when he gets to Cleveland.
I read somewhere that Thompson’s performance at UGA’s pro day was really bad. That despite his good performance at the Combine, that day essentially sunk his chance to get drafted. It’s a huge shame because the guy has so much talent. I really hope that he’s able to come into the Browns camp healthy. If he does, the guy has a chance to shock the NFL and prove them all wrong.
