Georgia Football took a rare loss on the recruiting trail when Owen Pappoe picked Auburn last night, but the Dawgs are already moving on.
Well, that’s one recruitment over. Georgia Football got some bad news on Tuesday night. The long time in state target Owen Pappoe choose Auburn over UGA in a locally televised ceremony. It was pretty surprising because he’s a player that profiles very similarly to Roquan Smith. Most industry insiders thought that UGA was in the lead for quite some time because of statements that Pappoe himself made.
But in the end, he told Jeff Sentell that he has actually been thinking Auburn since November. The Tigers wins over UGA and Bama during the season apparently made his mind up for him. The fact that those same Tigers got beat down by UGA in the SEC Championship game apparently didn’t matter. Nor did the humiliating loss to a UCF team in the Peach Bowl so make of that what you will. Maybe those ‘division championship rings’ were just too alluring for Pappoe to turn down…
Sour grapes aside, its time for Georgia to move on and by the looks of it, they already have. Kirby Smart and inside LB coach Glen Schumann sent out a nice passive aggressive tweet after the decision:
It’s a nice little reminder that UGA is good at developing inside linebackers. Sure, having talented players is great, but UGA isn’t lacking in those. The 2018 class is loaded with LB talent and they already have 2 top ILB commits. But UGA wants one more guy to round out this 2019 class and that’s why they chased Pappoe. So who are they looking at right now? Well, it starts those 2 guys already heading to Athens.
