Georgia Football: The Battle of 5-star tackles continues
Mays doesn’t look like a freshman:
I’ve already developed a lineman crush on Cade Mays. The guy has only been in Athens for 4 months and has yet to take a snap in a live game. And yet, when I was looking at his high school tape during his recruitment, I got weak at the knees.
Mays is one of the nastiest players I have ever seen play high school football. Much like Wilson, he’s also pretty freaking huge. Mays came to UGA at 6-6 and 318lbs. Standing next to anyone other than Wilson, that would make him look like a damn monster. But somehow, Wilson still has 30lbs on him.
While he might not quite have the same bulk, Mays plays with a violent streak that you rarely see these days. He ends up on the floor a lot more than I’m sure Sam Pittman wants to see in his high school tape. But he’s almost always on top of some poor unfortunate guy that he has driven to the turf.
Mays looked good on G-day, showing improved technique and not going to ground as much. His play also reminded me that he’s a very good athlete for his size as well. Mays has the ability to be more than just a mauler when he wants to be and he showed that. While he still has a ways to go, the fact is that Mays showed that he can hang against talented players when he should still be in high school. That bodes well for his future between the hedges.
