Georgia Football: The Battle of 5-star tackles continues
This thing isn’t over:
The battle for right tackle is just getting started. That’s because both of these guys are still learning the position and how to play at this level. There’s no doubt that both of them have the talent to shine once they find their feet, however. Having two 5-stars battle it out for this one spot is one of the reasons why I think the offensive line is going to be even better this year.
On G-day, neither side really ran the ball. The point of that scrimmage was to work on pass protection and give the QB’s a chance to throw the ball. Both Wilson and Mays should excel in the run game when we get to the actual season. These are two guys who love to maul and throw people around while creating holes for their running backs. Whoever ends up starting next to Ben Cleveland is going to create a right side that our backs will love running behind.
Of course, whoever wins might not hold the job all year. We saw when Cleveland came in and overtook Solomon Kindley late in the season last year that sometimes these things do take time. If Mays doesn’t win the job this year, that doesn’t mean he might not end up winning it in camp in 2019. Kirby Smart is going to keep this competition going as long as he’s in Athens.

All of which makes for a pretty exciting fall. Watching these two play on G-day was one of my favorite parts of the whole day. There’s nothing quite like seeing a dominant offensive tackle who just doesn’t seem to like other human beings. Right now, UGA has two of those battling for the same spot. We’ve come an awfully long way from 2016…
