Georgia football: Top five programs UGA has only played once
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
Now we finish our countdown with the powerhouses, first with Ohio State who’s average ranking of 6.42 lands them at no. 4. The Buckeye’s are highly ranked in every category. Their eight national titles are no. 6 nationally, and their 898 all-time wins are no. 3. And they claim the no. 1 spot in weeks ranked in the AP Poll and weeks at no. 1.
Ohio State has only one losing record since 1988. Since then they have 11 Big 10 Championships and two National Championships. They also have 18 10-win seasons since then. And that 1988 season is just an outlier. They had 13 Big 10 Championships between 1968 and 1986 with two claimed National Championships.
But one thing they have not accomplished is beating the Georgia Bulldogs. The two squads met in the 1993 Citrus Bowl with Georgia winning 21-14. Both teams barely missed out on winning their conference championship that season.
Both were also completing rebuilds. Ohio State had bounced back from their disappointing 1988 season and they won the Big 10 in 1993. Georgia had a losing record in 1989 and 1990, but they finished 10-2 in the SEC East and were one win away from playing in the first SEC Championship Game.
1. Oklahoma Sooners
By process of elimination, you probably already guessed who was no. 1; the Oklahoma Sooners. Their 6.33 average ranking has them sitting pretty at no. 3. Only Alabama and USC are ranked ahead of them.
The Sooners are also ranked no. 7 with seven National Championships and 884 all-time wins. and they claim a no. 3 ranking with weeks ranked and weeks at no. 1 by the AP. Besides an uncharacteristic stretch from 1992-to-1998 where the Sooners only had one winning season, they constantly hang over the 10-win mark.
They’ve won at least 10 games 15 times since 2000 when they their last National Championship. And from 1967-to-1987, they won the Big-Eight Championship a whopping 15 times. That stretch featured three national titles.
Next: Why Auburn is without a doubt, Georgia's biggest rival
Surprisingly, Georgia and Oklahoma had never played before the Rose Bowl five months ago. That victory is still fresh in our minds. I’m sure most of y’all watch some kind of highlight from that game at least twice a week. In case you need a refresher, Georgia won 54-48 in overtime to advance to the National Championship Game.
