Georgia Football promoted James Coley to be co-offensive coordinator this offseason. Could this move change the way the Dawgs play in 2018?

Kirby Smart managed to hold on to his prized coaches this past offseason. James Coley has become one of the best recruiters in the country over the years. He was an upcoming superstar when he was learning under Jimbo Fisher at Florida State.

After a disappointing few years at Miami, Coley joined Kirby Smarts staff as wide receiver’s coach. Since arriving, he’s excelled and reminded the wider coaching world why he was such a hot coaching commodity just 5 years ago. He dramatically elevated UGA’s wide receivers during his second season. Terry Godwin, Javon Wims, and Mecole Hardman both took huge steps during his time at the helm.

He also continues to be one of the best recruiters in the country. Coley has deep, long-standing ties to the state of Florida. No matter what position a player might be, if UGA has it’s eye on a kid in that state, Coley is involved. His relationships and his connections in one of the most talent-rich states in the country is invaluable to any program.

Which is why it wasn’t a surprise that others came calling this offseason. When Jimbo Fisher moved to Texas A&M, Coley was one of the first people he called. Fortunately for UGA, Coley turned down the OC job in College station to stat in Athens. But that came with a big pay raise and a new title as co-offensive coordinator.

So will this move affect the offense at all in 2018? Jim Chaney remained the target of ire of some UGA fans despite a historic 2017 season. Does moving someone like Coley into this position mean we’re looking at a more open offense this coming season?
