Expect Jim Chaney to still call the plays:
Ironically, Coley’s background is a lot more traditional than Jim Chaney. It was a long time ago, but a lot of people have forgotten that Chaney was a pioneer of the spread offense. During his time at Purdue, Chaney ran a system that shocked a lot of the college football world and made Drew Brees a star.
Chaney’s appreciation of the pro-style offense came later, after spending time in the NFL. So while Coley is younger, I don’t think it’s fair to suggest that he’s more innovative than Chaney. That doesn’t mean that this offense won’t have a few more kinks in it than it did the past few years.
While Coley will be more involved in the game planning, Chaney is still going to be the playcaller. Fans always seem to complain about play callers these days but Chaney actually did really well last year. With an improved offensive line, it was clear that his gameplan actually could work. He also threw in lots of schematic changes that confused defenses.
Say what you want about Chaney, the guy knows how to upset defenses. He loves to throw out different formations at teams and force them to think about what’s actually happening. Coley will be involved in identifying those formations and the plays before the game. However, when we’re in game time, it’s still going to be Chaney who makes those calls.
