Georgia Football: Does James Coley’s promotion change things?
Chaney’s move might affect the offense more than Coley:
There might actually be a bigger move than Coleys. When he was reshuffling his staff, Kirby Smart set his sights on wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton. Hankton is a rising star as a coach who played his way into the NFL. But by bringing him in, Smart needed to reshuffle his staff a bit and move around Coley and Chaney.
Coley took over the role that Chaney had working with QBs. This wasn’t new for Coley who had done this at both Florida State and Miami. Chaney then moved to work with tight ends, a position he coached in the NFL.
This move could end up making bigger changes to the offense than Coley. I’m not saying that Chaney is going to throw the ball more to tight ends now because he’s coaching them. However, there’s a chance that he does feel more comfortable doing so.
UGA is going to have some really talented weapons at the position over the next few years. Issac Nauta for one is a player who many expect to break out. Working with him every day rather than the QB’s could help Chaney to identify how best to use Nauta and the other TE’s.
That could end up being the biggest adjustment UGA make in 2018. Jake Fromm didn’t use tight ends much last year as he relied on his outside recievers. However, UGA will have mismatches there and if schemed correctly, they could be big time weapons.
