Georgia Football: The ‘Wolfpack’ should be even better in 2018
Walter Grant, the forgotten man:
I should probably start by saying that I am a huge Walter Grant fan. Coming out of Cairo Georgia, I’m not sure there was anyone more under the radar in the 2017 class. Grant took Leonard Floyd’s number 84 jersey when he arrived and flashed potential almost immediately. The Dawgs saw Chauncey Manac, a highly rated recruit who was a year older transfer after Grant arrived because he took a 2nd team spot so quickly. That says a whole lot about how good Grant could be.
Based off the reports, Grant is stepping in to the Lorenzo Carter position. He’s a very athletic guy and highly versatile so that’s a great fit. It also means that he might not be rushing the passer a tremendous amount during his time in Athens like Carter. Instead he will likely play a key role in stopping the run as covering tight ends when necessary.
This isn’t the most glamorous position as Carter found out. What Grant will need to do to replace Carter is not only be consistent, but also force some turnovers. Carter forced and recovered several big time fumbles in 2017 even though he wasn’t consistently rushing the pass rusher. That’s not easy but it’s something Grant could do as well over the next few seasons.
With some very talented players coming in soon, Grant is going to have to earn his starting spot. I expect that he will, but that versatility will be key for him. There are a lot of other guys that are going to deserve reps in this unit.
