Georgia Football: Athlon magazine forgets Jake Fromm exists
Where do I start with Nick Fitzgerald…
Talking about myths… Look I don’t want to bash Nick Fitzgerald. He seems like a good guy who has worked his way to becoming a good dual-threat QB. But can we just take a minute to look at his actual production? I’m pretty sure it’s not as good as a lot of people think.
Fitzpatrick took a step back in 2017 from a production standpoint. He wasn’t as good as he was back in 2016. He accounted for 900 fewer yards and 8 fewer touchdowns that he did in the previous year. That a pretty significant drop in production.
Now, this wasn’t a schematic issue. Fitzgerald played his entire career under Dan Mullen and ran an offense that he knows like the back of his hand. Still, he put together a season where he was just not as good as the previous year. Now it’s not all bad, Fitzgerald does well in his QBR rankings each year. He’s still behind Fromm, but only by 3 points so he’s still better than Stidham in that category.
But I just don’t know with Fitzgerald. He’s a good QB who tends to do well against bad teams, but really good teams almost always shut him down. When you look at his stats last year against UGA, Auburn, and Bama, they are pretty terrible compared to everyone else. He beat up guys like BYU and Kentucky but when the games count, he struggles.
Throw in an ankle injury that he’s currently recovering from and I just don’t see how he’s ranked above Fromm. Maybe its because he’s a senior or maybe its because the writers think Joe Moorehead will do more with him than Dan Mullen. But in 2017, Fromm was the better QB and it wasn’t really close.
