Georgia Football might be cautious with only 2 QBs
Georgia Football will have a decision to make at QB with Stetson Bennett leaving. Will they actually unleash freshman phenom Justin Fields?
It shouldn’t make a huge difference really. When Georgia Football losses a walk-on to a transfer, it shouldn’t affect a tea as deep as UGA are right now. But the loss of Stetson Bennett will hurt UGA for a variety of reasons. To start with, you never want to lose good players. However, it also means that Georgia really are just 2 deep at QB right now If Jake Fromm and Justin Fields were to both get injured, its hard to see what UGA would do at QB this year.
Is that unlikely? Sure, but it’s not impossible. Just ask Maryland who have been forced to start 3 QB’s for each of the past 3 season due to injury. It therefore begs the question, what will Kirby Smart do with Justin Fields?
With Bennett around, you could see Fields getting on the field and being let lose in certain situations. Without him, I still expect Fields to get playing time, but things might be a bit different. The coaches will want to get him experience because he’ll be one play away from being the sole QB left on the roster. Because of that, they could also be more conservative than fans like myself were hoping for.
Fields is a phenomenal talent. He’s a much better passer than people realize, but his athleticism is genuinely special. He’s someone you can see gashing defenses with his legs if he’s given the chance and that’s something UGA fans desperately hope to see. But will that happen with just 2 scholarship QBs?

I’m not saying that Georgia will play scared, but injury is now a very legitimate concern at QB. There’s no Brice Ramsey on this roster who wasn’t good, but at least he was viable. The good news is that Fields could get more playing time earlier than expected as the coaches try to get him up to speed. The bad is that we might not see that electric athleticism as much as we want. UGA is still in an enviable QB position compared to almost every other team. But still, things are not quite as rosy as they were with Bennett.
