Georgia Basketball gets commitment from Lithuanian Guard
Georgia Basketball and new head coach Tom Crean got a surprise commitment yesterday from Lithuanian guard Ignas Sargiunas.
Surprising nobody, Tom Crean has been a busy bee on the recruiting trail. Although the 2018 class was signed before he arrived, Crean has been working hard to bring in a bit more talent. He got some good news yesterday, with his second commitment since arriving in Athens.
Lithuanian guard Ignas Sargiunas committed to UGA according to Draft Express’ Jonathan Givony. It is the second commitment that Crean has brought in since arriving in Athens. The first was Tye Fagan, a combo guard who reopened his recruitment after his the head coach he signed with left for Ole Miss.
Sargiunas looks like exactly the kind of player UGA needs. Based on the limited highlight film that Dawgnation found, the guy can hit 3-pointers. That was a serious issue last year so it’s exciting that Crean has found a potential solution. There was almost nobody on the roster last year who could consistently shoot.
While Sargiunas is young and might take time, his commitment is a big win for the program. Givony mentions that Sargiunas made some waves a few years ago when he played well against a loaded under-17 USA squad. He’ll come into the program as a 19-year-old and could be more ready to contribute than some might expect.
Next: 93 days til football season!
Both Fagan and Sargiunas are combo-guards who can play on the wings and score. That’s exactly what UGA needs going into this season and it’s great to see Crean improve on a weakness.UGA desperately needs improved shooting and penetration from those guard positions this coming season. Hopefully, these signings give Crean more options going forward.
