Georgia Football had a great defensive line last season, but is Tray Scott under increased pressure due to recent recruiting misses?
If there is one thing that Kirby Smart has a reputation for building, it’s defensive lines. During his time at Alabama, Smart was responsible for building one of the toughest and most dominant lines in college football history. Year after year, he’d sign top talent and develop them into future NFL players. It’s something he’s looking to recreate since he took over the Georgia Football program.
Last year, he brought in Tray Scott to try and make that a reality. Scott was brought in after previous DL coach Tracy Rocker was relieved of his duties after missing on 2 5-star defensive tackles. Smart expects more than just good play on the field from his coaches. He’s also looking for them to deliver on the recruiting trail as well.
Since arriving in Athens, the results in that regard have been mixed for Scott. His first recruiting class saw was relatively light, with a lot of focus going into other positions by the staff. But this 2019 class was supposed to be one where the Dawgs really went all in on defensive tackles. So far, Scott has yet to deliver them a prized recruit.
Despite that, the results on the field have been stellar. His unit was comfortably one of the best in the country in 2017 and helped anchor one of the nations best defenses. After missing on DT CJ Clark yesterday, Scott is starting to take a lot of flack from UGA fans desperate for some DL recruits. Is that criticism fair, or has Scott brought in the best talent he could so far?
