Georgia Football makes Dell McGee and Assistant Head Coach
Georgia Football rewarded Dell McGee with a new contract after his stellar 2018 recruiting class, but they also gave him a nice new job title.
Dell McGee can say that he earned this. When he was hired onto Kirby Smarts first coaching staff McGee was the most unknown name. While he had experience in the high school ranks, he was very limited in terms of college exposure. Smart showed a lot of faith in him when he made him the Georgia Football running backs coach.
McGee has repaid that faith many times over. Not only did he recruit the nations number 1 and 3 backs in the same class last year. He was also the lead recruiter on Justin Fields, Azeez Ojulari and Brenton Cox. That is an insane accomplishment from such a young coach. Recruits like that made McGee the number 1 recruiter in all of college football last year.
He’s been richly rewarded with a new contract but Smart knows the vultures are coming. You can’t be that successful and not have other programs chase after you. With Jim Chaney entrenched as offensive coordinator and James Coley joining him, Smart had to get creative. It was always going to take a bit more than a pay raise.

This was his solution. McGee was listed in UGA’s media guide for the 2018 season as ‘Assistant Head Coach – Running Backs’. It’s a fair reward for a guy who has become so important to this UGA team. McGee also did a great job with his backs last season and will have some incredible talented players to work with this season. He’ll also continue to pursue some very talented players in the 2019 class and I’d bet on him nabbing at least one more star.
