The 2018 Georgia football season begins in 45 days.

45 days until kickoff means it’s time to talk about one of the greatest feats in Georgia football history. In 1945, the Dawgs shutout all four of their biggest rivals. That’s right, four rivalries, zero points allowed. Wouldn’t you love to see that happen again in 2018?

The domination over Georgia’s rivals began in week two with a 20-0 victory over Clemson. But the domination became really impressive later in the season. On November 10, Georgia played Florida and beat them 34-0 in Jacksonville. A week later, they thumped Auburn 35-0 in Columbus. And they finished the regular season a week after that with a 33-0 victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

Four rivalry games. Only one game played in Athens. A combined score of 122-0. Talk about bragging rights. You thought Georgia had a great year against rivals in 2017.

The 1945 season is also notable because of Charley Trippi’s return six games into the season. Trippi, along with many other college football players around the country, left their schools to join the military for World War II.

The atomic bombs dropped on Japan in August and the their eventual surrender meant that the war was over. Many players still had years of eligibility left. Trippi was one of them and he returned to school in October. Though he was unable to play until October 27 against Alabama.

Georgia lost that game 28-14, and they lost to LSU the week before in their last game without Trippi. But his return sparked a great finish to the 1945 season. Georgia won their last five games all away from home. Including the three shutouts, they beat Chattanooga on the road, and Tulsa in the Oil Bowl in Houston.
