Southern Methodist University recently released the watch list for the Doak Walker Award which includes Georgia football tailback D’Andre Swift.

One of the most prestigious position awards in college football released their preseason watch list Wednesday. The Doak Walker Award for the best running back has completed their short list of candidates. Georgia football fans will be happy to know that sophomore D’Andre Swift is on that list.

Swift is coming off an impressive freshman season where he had 771 all-purpose yards with four touchdowns as a third-string tailback. Considering the two players ahead of him were modern legends Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, 771 yards is a chunk.

The Doak Walker Award is named after the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner who played for the SMU Mustangs. According to Southern Methodist University:

"The prestigious Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 to recognize the nation’s premier running back for his accomplishments on the field, achievement in the classroom and citizenship in the community. It is the only major collegiate football award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification."

If he wins, Swift will be the second Georgia player to win the award. Garrison Hearst won the award in 1992. He rushed for 1,547 with a school record 19 rushing touchdowns that year. He also had 324 receiving yards and two more touchdowns. Knowshon Moreno was a finalist for the award in 2008 and many other Georgia running back’s were named on the preseason watch list in the past.

The award will be presented during the Home Depot College Football Award Show on December 6. SMU will host an award banquet at a later date. Stanford’s Bryce Love won the award last season. Since its creation in 1989, four SEC running back’s have won the award. Darren McFadden won the award twice in 2006 and 2007.
