The 2018 Georgia football season begins in 41 days.

It’s Sunday, that means another week has disappeared from our countdown. Just 41 days, less than six weeks remain until the 2018 Georgia football season begins. Going back to last season, the 2017 team tried to get Georgia over the hump. Much like the team from 1941.

Going into 2017, the Dawgs had a 12-year SEC Championship drought. The 1941 team had a 21-year conference championship drought. Kirby Smart was in his second year at Georgia last year, while Wally Butts coached his third season at Georgia in 41′.

So many similarities between now and the early 1940’s. Unfortunately the 1941 team didn’t get over the hump thanks to Alabama, another similarity between 1941 and 2017. But that team did show what kind of program Georgia was building. The 41′ squad included the legendary Frank Sinkwich and his reliable passing targets Lamar Davis and George Poschner.

Together, they propelled Georgia’s offense to 319 points, an average of 29 per game. The Dawgs outscored opponents 319-85 and they had four shutouts. The team ended the season 9-1-1 and 3-1-1 in the SEC. The only blemishes were a 14-14 tie with Ole Miss and a 27-14 loss to Alabama. Georgia did however play in their first bowl game that year, defeating Texas Christian 40-26 in the Orange Bowl.

Next: Georgia needs to make Atlanta their second home

luckily, Georgia fans didn’t have to wait long to see the team get over the hump. The 1942 Bulldogs completed an 11-1 season with a SEC Championship, National Championship and a Rose Bowl victory. Hopefully, the parallels can continue in 2018 and the Bulldogs will reign supreme as National Champions at the end of this season.
