Georgia Football Recruiting goes into Overdrive on Sunday
Rian Davis, Linebacker
Last but not least is Rian Davis. A versatile linebacker out of Florida, Davis is someone who has quietly become a top 100 recruit while almost nobody was talking about him. The Dawgs focused heavily on him after Owen Pappe choose to go to Auburn and not it seems like that time was well spent.
Davis is more versatile than Pappoe and can play pretty much anywhere in the linebacking corp. At high school, he plays all over the place and is listed as an OLB by the recruiting services. All the reports that I’ve seen have suggested that Georgia sees him as more of an ILB and a guy who can play the Natrez Patrick role.
There’s a lot to like in his film. Davis is quick to the ball and explodes when tackling. He’s not a ‘freak’ athlete like Pappoe or Quay Walker last year, but he’s pretty damn impressive. He’s clearly got the ability to do pretty much whatever he wants on the football field, it’s just a matter of using him correctly.
Fortunately for Davis, the guy who will be coaching him if he is an ILB is Glen Schumann. While the likes of Dell McGee and Sam Pittman grab a lot of headlines, a lot of people forget that Schumann was Kirby Smart’s very first hire. He climbed the ranks at Alabama and is seen by many as the future defensive coordinator when Mel Tucker ends up getting a head coaching job. Roquan Smith certainly got a lot better under him.
Emery, Tongue, and Davis all add real, tangible talent to a class that is starting to look just as loaded as 2018. That’s a very big present for Georgia fans to receive just a week or so before training camp gets started. It’s also a very ominous sign for the rest of the SEC. Kirby wasn’t joking when he said that UGA was here to stay at the national championship game. Based off another dominant recruiting performance, the Dawgs are just getting started.
