Georgia Football fans were rightly ecstatic when highly regarded receiver Demetris Robertson transferred to UGA, but his story is about more than football.

Too often, we fans forget that football players are actually people just like ourselves. Yes, they play in front of tens of thousands every weekend and millions on TV. But at the end of the day, college football players are still growing up and while the sport is important, there are more important things. That’s certainly the case with new Georgia Football wide receiver Demetris Robertson.

Like every other fan, I’m so excited to see him line up between the hedges. He was electric in his freshman season and looks like the closest thing Georgia have had to a number one receiver since AJ Green. But Robertson didn’t transfer to Georgia just because he fancied a change. The young man has had to deal with some really serious family issues the past year or so.

This morning Dawgnation.com reporter Jeff Sentell put out an article about Robertson and an interview he did with his brother Carlos. It’s a fantastic read and I really recommend ever Dawg fan take 5 minutes and go through it. Simply put, it’s a great insight into how life can change when a family member gets ill.

Even though Robertson was a star on the field and the classroom at Cal, being 3000 miles from his family took it’s tole. While he’s now closer to home, the situations that led to his move have not gone away. He still has a sick mother and several other losses in the family to deal with. All of which is worth remembering when it comes to the 2018 season. I like many expect Robertson to have a big impact, but he’s been through a lot the past 12 months.

Patience is never easy to come across when it comes to college football fans. But the players have lives outside of the hedges and that’s worth remembering when we’re all heaping expectations on their backs. I still think D-Rob will shine in this coming season, but if he doesn’t that doesn’t mean he’s a scrub or a bust. He’s a kid who has come home to earn his degree and be closer to his family. Hopefully his story includes some great moments on the field in Athens, but like everyone player, there’s a lot more to Robertson than just football.
