Defensive Newcomer to watch:
Alistair:
In terms of new players to the program, I think it’s going to be hard for anyone to have as big of an impact as Brenton Cox. Having arrived in January, Cox just looks like he’s ready to go already and I expect him to find a way onto the field. Last year, I picked Walter Grant and was really impressed by his play, but I expect more from Cox. He’s got the ability to become a core part of the DL and OLB rotation by the time the year ends. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get 4-5 sacks this year and get stronger as the season goes on.
Davis:
Of all the freshmen on Georgia’s team, Tyson Campbell has the best chance to start in his very first game. Not only is he an exceptional talent, but key defensive back Tyrique McGhee is dealing with a foot injury that will keep him out of Georgia’s season opener (and maybe longer). Campbell has a real opportunity to take a starting spot on defense and never look back. We’ll see if he’s up to the task.
Kyle:
Tyson Campbell without a doubt. Most freshman defensive backs, especially corners, expect to receive most of their work as safeties or nickel backs. Not Campbell, since joining the team, he’s played corner almost exclusively. That shows me that the coaches believe he’s ready to be a factor on defense.
Mike:
I’m looking at 5-star defensive back recruit Tyson Campbell. With the recent injury to Tyrique Mcgee, it should allow more opportunities for Campbell to see the field as a freshman. Kirby Smart has taken plenty of time with the kid, and that can only be a good thing. Being a former defensive back himself, Coach Smart has a soft spot for this position and spends extra time in practice with the DBs. Look for Campbell to make some noise and finish the season on the All-SEC freshman team.
