The defense is going to be much more fluid than the offense and we will likely see a lot of these guys get significant playing time. Formations and rotations will likely mean that Jay Hayes see’s plenty of reps, but I doubt that he will ever be a starter. The defensive line and linebacking corp is going to rotate like crazy early in the season as the Dawgs look to see who is ready to claim starting jobs. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if freshmen like Brenton Cox and Quay Walker end up starting some games particularly if there are injuries.
In the secondary, there is going to be a lot of competition. Sophomores Ameer Speed, Eric Stokes and William Poole have all impressed this summer. Stokes in particular has stepped up his play and he’s got true lightning speed. He’s someone that could end up guarding specific receivers depending on the match ups. They’re going to have to keep getting better because there are freshmen who are fighting for playing time themselves.
Unless he gets injured, I think that Tyson Campbell is going to end up making a huge impact. His tools are incredible and while he might make a few mistakes, he’s going to be given the chance to learn on the job. If his play improves throughout the season, the Dawgs could enter the business end of the season with one of the best secondaries in the entire league. He and Mark Webb look like potential bookend corners who will learn a lot from Deandre Baker.
