Georgia Football: Who takes a step up in 2018?
Elijah Holyfield, RB:
D’Andre Swift is rightly getting a lot of attention right now. He is the clearcut leader to be the top running back in 2018. But don’t forget about Holyfield who brings a skill set to the UGA backfield that none of the other players can match.
With Nick Chubb now departed, Holyfield is probably the player most likely to run between the tackles. Every Dawg fan knows that he is the son of Evander Holyfield and he looks like it on the football field. Elijah runs with true power and looks to punish tacklers for trying to tackle him.
Those highlights have both Brian Herrien and Holyfield, but it’s the latter who really stands out. In 2017, he earned the role of ‘closer’ who ran the ball down teams throats after UGA has secured victories. He showed time and again that even though teams knew that he was getting the ball, that he wasn’t going to be stopped. He also showed impressive speed and burst when he got into the open field.
Yes, Swift and freshman James Cook are going to impress in 2018. However, if Georgia is going to reach their potential, they need Holyfield to take a step up and become the 2nd running back. With Zamir White now missing the season the Dawgs need him to establish himself as a legitimate worry for other teams.
Georgia should have the offensive line to dominate the point of attack. I expect Holyfield to become the go-to guy between the tackles and end up becoming one of the most dangerous weapons in a diverse Georgia offense. He has the potential to get 10-15 touchdowns in this offense, which would certainly count as a breakout season.
